A couple of months ago I had a dream. In the dream I was being attacked by a giant snake. I knew that the snake represented sin, death, and temptation, and I was terrified. I heard myself begin to chant:
“Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise…”
I was surprised to hear myself repeating these words because, though I’d heard them before, I’d never prayed them or had any sort of devotion to Saint Patrick. Immediately, though, I detected a force field surrounding me, blocking the snake from sinking his fangs into me. Every time he tried to bite me, he would get no further than the outer layer of the force field.
After a time, God lifted me up and we rocketed into the atmosphere, the snake growing smaller and smaller as we flew farther and farther away from the earth.
It was, and remains, clear to me that what God was telling me was that as long as I continuously allow him to surround me, I have nothing to fear. He was telling me that there will be a day when I am freed of struggle and temptation and pain but until then, I must allow him to wrap me up in his impenetrable love. As long as I do that, I will be safe. And one day, he will come and free me, and you, from the trials of this world.
I wanted to share this story with you because I believe that when God speaks love and comfort to one of us, he is speaking it to all of us. So know this: if you are in pain right now, if you are scared, or if you are being attacked in some way, God wants nothing more than to surround you with his super-powered awesome forcefield of love. Allow him to do this and all will be well because with him, you are safe. And loved. Always.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, sweet friends!
